Lighting your art: how to display paintings, sculptures, and wall pieces correctly

A painter works in natural light — full spectrum, high fidelity, every nuance of colour and texture visible exactly as intended. That painting is then framed, brought home, hung on a wall, and lit by a standard LED downlight with a colour rendering index of around 75 and a cool 4000K colour temperature. What the viewer sees from that point on is a flattened, slightly colour-shifted version of what the artist actually painted. The reds sit a shade duller. The blues lean grey. The texture that caught your eye in the gallery disappears into flat, even light.

It isn't the art that changed. It's the light.

This is a fixable problem, and it's a lot simpler than most homeowners assume. Galleries and museums light art according to a small set of well-established principles — the same ones professional lighting designers use whether the piece is hanging in a private collection in Cape Town or a major public gallery overseas. None of it requires specialist equipment or a renovation. It requires knowing what to specify, and where to position it.

Why your art looks better in a gallery than at home

Galleries aren't doing anything mysterious. They're following three rules that most home lighting simply ignores.

Rule 1: High CRI. Gallery lighting typically sits at CRI 90–95 or higher. Most home LED downlights sit at CRI 70–80. At CRI 75, reds shift toward orange, blues drift toward grey, and the overall painting reads as duller and less vibrant than it should. The fix costs nothing extra — a CRI 90+ GU10 LED bulb is priced comparably to a standard CRI 80 bulb. This is a specification choice, not a budget one.

Rule 2: The 30° angle. The angle at which light strikes the artwork determines whether you see the painting or the glare bouncing off it. Aimed at roughly 30° from vertical, light illuminates the canvas while directing its reflection away from the viewer's eye line. Go steeper and you get glare. Go shallower and you get a shadow pooling at the top of the canvas. Most home downlights are fixed straight down at 0° — which is precisely the wrong angle for artwork.

Rule 3: The right beam angle for the size of the piece. A wide beam dilutes light across the wall around a painting rather than on the painting itself. A narrow beam concentrates it. Galleries typically work in the 15°–40° range, choosing a beam that defines the artwork rather than simply lighting its surroundings.

The 30° rule: how to position any light correctly over a painting

This is the single most useful thing to take from this article — if you remember nothing else, remember 30° from vertical.

The correct ceiling offset depends on two measurements: your ceiling height, and the height of the painting's centre on the wall. As a rough guide for a standard South African home with a 2.7m ceiling:

  • Painting centre at around 1.5m from the floor → position the track roughly 400–500mm out from the wall
  • Painting centre at around 1.8m (a larger piece, hung higher) → bring the track in slightly, to roughly 300–400mm
  • Higher ceilings (3m or more) allow the track to sit slightly further out

You don't need to do the trigonometry. A simple practical shortcut works just as well: start with your track or spotlight around 500mm from the wall and adjust from there. Stand at your normal viewing distance and look at the artwork. If you can see a reflection of the light fitting in the painting's surface, move the light further from the wall. If the top of the canvas sits in shadow, move it closer.

For oil paintings and other heavily textured work, reduce the angle slightly to around 25° from vertical. This lets the light graze across the surface rather than sitting flat on it, which brings out the texture of the brushwork instead of flattening it.

Beam angle: choosing the right spread for different pieces

Beam angle is the detail almost no one at home has ever considered, and it makes a visible difference.

CRI: the specification that changes everything

CRI measures how accurately a light source renders colour compared with natural daylight, which sits at CRI 100. Standard home LED downlights typically measure CRI 70–80 — perfectly fine for general ambient lighting, and wrong for artwork. The minimum for art lighting is CRI 90+; for valuable or colour-critical pieces, CRI 95+ is what serious collectors and galleries specify. The difference is immediate and visible: a painting under CRI 95 light looks as the artist intended it to look. The same painting under CRI 75 light looks like a slightly faded reproduction of itself.

To get the full benefit of any art lighting spotlight, pair it with a CRI 90+ GU10 LED bulb. Standard GU10 bulbs from a hardware store are typically CRI 75–80 and will limit colour accuracy on your artwork no matter how well the fitting is positioned.

LED is also the correct light source for artwork for reasons beyond colour. It produces no UV radiation and very little heat, both of which degrade pigment and canvas over time. Halogen bulbs, still found in some older picture lights, emit meaningful UV and infrared and should be swapped for LED equivalents even in fittings that are otherwise working perfectly well.

Lighting paintings — the complete guide

Flat canvases (unframed or softly framed): A track spotlight or adjustable ceiling spotlight, positioned around 500mm in front of the wall, angled at 30°, running a CRI 90+ bulb with beam angle matched to the canvas size. This setup covers the large majority of paintings in a home.

Glass-framed work (prints, photographs, drawings): Glass reflects, and the 30° angle minimises this without eliminating it entirely. Two things help further: an anti-glare spotlight head, which uses internal baffles to eliminate the visible bright point of the lamp that causes most glass reflections, and simply checking the reflection from your actual viewing position before finalising the angle. Oil paintings with heavy texture: Aim slightly shallower than 30°, at around 25° from vertical, so the light rakes across the surface and reveals the brushwork rather than flattening it.

Large statement canvases (over 120cm wide): A single spot creates a hotspot at the beam's centre. Lighting sculptures and 3D wall pieces

Three-dimensional work is the most commonly mishandled art lighting challenge in a home. A single overhead spot doesn't reveal a sculpture — it flattens it, casting harsh, one-directional shadows that obscure form rather than describing it.

The fix is cross-lighting: a primary light from above and slightly to one side (at roughly 30°, as with a painting) provides the main illumination, while a secondary fill light from the opposite side, at around half the intensity, softens the harsh shadows and reveals the piece's full form. For a freestanding sculpture on a plinth or shelf, that typically means a primary spot from above-left and a secondary fill from the right, at lower intensity. For 3D wall pieces and relief work, a single spot angled at around 45° to the wall plane (rather than 30° from vertical) creates dramatic raking light that reveals dimensionality. Finely textured surfaces — carved, hammered, or woven — benefit from a tighter beam and a steeper raking angle for more pronounced shadow depth.

Cool white light (3000K–3500K) suits modern, contemporary, and metallic sculpture. Warm white (2700K) suits organic, clay, bronze, and natural-material work, and African art in particular.

Picture lights: the traditional alternative to track spotlights

Picture lights are a different solution to the same problem, not an inferior one. A picture light mounts directly on the wall above the frame and projects its beam forward and downward across the canvas — the geometry that a track spot has to be positioned to achieve is built into the fitting itself.

Picture lights make the most sense when ceiling access is difficult, when the interior is traditional or heritage in style (a picture light reads as classical, which suits oil paintings in ornate frames), when only one or two pieces need lighting, or when running cable to the ceiling isn't practical. Track spotlights remain the better choice for rooms with multiple pieces, for flexibility to reposition light later, and for glass-framed art, where a picture light's downward projection is more likely to create a visible reflection.

A gallery wall needs to read as a single composition while each piece still holds its own presence, and lighting is what makes or breaks that.

Keep colour temperature consistent across every fitting on the wall. A 2700K spot next to a 3500K spot makes an otherwise well-curated wall look mismatched — one painting reading warm, its neighbour reading cool. Choose 2700K–3000K for a residential living-room gallery wall, or 3000K–3500K for a studio, office, or more contemporary space, and keep the whole group on the same setting.

Beam angles should generally match too, unless you're deliberately drawing the eye to a hero piece with a narrower, more intense beam. For a tightly curated wall where every piece matters individually, run individual track spots per piece at 30°. For a looser, more decorative arrangement where the overall composition matters more than any single work, a wider 45°+ beam across the group creates an even glow that reads as one whole.

The practical guide: what to buy and where to put it

One painting on a feature wall: A single adjustable ceiling spotlight, or a short section of track lighting with one or two heads, positioned around 500mm from the wall. Specify a CRI 90+ GU10 bulb with beam angle matched to canvas size.

Three or four paintings on a long wall: A track rail running parallel to the wall, with heads positioned and aimed independently above each painting. Surface-mounted, so no ceiling modification is required.

Gallery wall (8–15 pieces): A longer track run, or two parallel runs on a wide wall, with a 40°–50° beam across the group and narrower beams reserved for two or three hero pieces.

Sculpture on a plinth or shelf: Two adjustable spotlights — primary from above at 30°, secondary fill from the opposite side at around half intensity. Achievable from a single Trouble Double fitting on a short track section.

No ceiling modification possible (rented property): A ceiling spotlight or recessed adjustable downlight positioned directly above the painting and angled toward it — less flexible than a full track run, but requiring only a single installation point.

Five art lighting mistakes SA homeowners make

  1. Using a standard downlight (CRI 75–80) aimed at a painting. Colours shift and vitality drops out of the piece. Swap in a CRI 90+ GU10 bulb in the same fitting.
  2. Positioning the spotlight directly above the artwork at 0°. This creates a hotspot at the top of the canvas and leaves the lower half comparatively shadowed. 30° from vertical is the correct angle.
  3. Using a wide beam on a small painting. A 60° beam on a 50cm canvas lights the wall more than the art itself. Use 15°–25° for small pieces.
  4. Lighting a sculpture with a single spot. This flattens a three-dimensional object into a harsh, one-directional shadow study. Use two lights from different directions instead.
  5. Mixing colour temperatures on a gallery wall. A 2700K spot next to a 4000K spot reads as inconsistent. Match colour temperature across every fitting in the group.

Bringing gallery-quality light home
