Frequently Asked Questions About Downlights

What's the difference between a recessed and surface-mounted downlight?

A recessed downlight sits flush inside the ceiling for a clean, low-profile look, while a surface-mounted downlight sits on top of the ceiling and suits homes without the ceiling depth for recessing.

How many downlights do I need for a room?

This depends on the room size, ceiling height and desired brightness. As a rough guide, space downlights roughly 1.2-1.5m apart for even general lighting, though check the lumens on each product page at Lighting.co.za.

Are downlights suitable for bathrooms?

Yes, provided the fitting has an appropriate IP rating for the bathroom zone it's installed in. Check the IP rating on each downlight product page before buying.

Can downlights be purchased online in South Africa?

We carry downlights at Lighting.co.za, and every order can be delivered anywhere in South Africa.

Can downlights be used for accent lighting as well as general lighting?

Yes, downlights work for general, task and accent lighting depending on placement, spacing and beam angle.

Are downlights dimmable?

It depends on the fitting. If it takes a replaceable bulb, fit a dimmable bulb with a compatible dimmer switch. If it's an integrated LED downlight, check the product description on Lighting.co.za to confirm it has a dimmable driver before buying.

Do downlights come with bulbs included?

This varies by fitting, so check the individual product page for confirmation.

Are downlights available for delivery outside major cities in South Africa?

Lighting.co.za's delivery network covers all of South Africa, so downlights reaches you wherever you are.
