Designing Room-by-Room : Illuminating the Foyer

LIGHTING LAYOUTS : THE FOYER

Foyers that welcome you home and hallways that usher you in.

When you or your guests arrive at your home, the first statement of your lighting style occurs in the entryway. Often the fixture you choose expresses your décor even before you approach your front door.

When an exterior window gives a view into a two-story foyer, be sure that the hanging fixture is centred and scaled to the frame of the window. Otherwise, be sure that fixtures in single-story foyers preserve 2.14m of space from the floor to the fixture’s bottom.

Sconces or portable lamps can be sued to flank mirrors or other areas of visual interest and provide an additional layer of ambient light. Flush mounts placed approximately every 3m provide safe passage through hallways, while sconces add eye-level ambiance.
